Saint Michael: Above the 38th Parallel — Military Edition, by Shanti Guy, is a full color 32 page comic book that tells the story of a Marine in the Korean War who finds himself behind enemy lines. Outnumbered and outgunned, his only hope is a miraculous apparition of Saint Michael the Archangel.
It's based on a real letter written in 1950 by a young Marine to his mother from a hospital bed, describing the fantastic events that befell him on patrol. Navy chaplain Father Walter Muldy personally knew the Marine, his mother, and the sergeant in charge of the patrol. One year later, Father Muldy read that same letter to 5,000 Marines at the Naval Base in San Diego and assured anyone who asked that it all really happened.
What makes this the Military Edition: This is the exact edition developed for an official program that distributes materials to U.S. military chaplains — packets meant to help Catholic soldiers keep the faith, and to give the faith-curious something worth checking out. Because it was built for the field, it's printed on noticeably thicker, more durable paper, and it skips the gold foil lettering (foil is too reflective and would ruin camouflage in the field). These are genuine leftovers from that print run — the same comic that was actually issued to the military. If you want a piece of that story, this is it.
